Emotional intelligence and organizational success

Efficient and effective use of human resources is one of the most important tasks of the organization. Emotional Intelligence - EQ - is a relatively recent behavioral model, rising to prominence with Daniel Goleman's 1995 Book called 'Emotional Intelligence'. Goleman identified the five 'domains' of EQ as: Knowing your emotions, managing your own emotions, motivating yourself, recognizing and understanding other people's emotions, managing relationships, i.e., managing the emotions of others. Emotional Intelligence is increasingly relevant to organizational development and developing people, because the EQ principles provide a new way to understand and assess people's behaviors, management styles, attitudes, interpersonal skills, and potential. Emotional Intelligence is an important consideration in human resources planning, job profiling, recruitment interviewing and selection, management development, customer relations and customer service, and more. EQ embraces two aspects of intelligence: understanding yourself, your goals, intentions, responses, behaviour and all; and understanding others, and their feelings. Different jobs also call for different types of emotional intelligence. Bosses and leaders, in particular, need high EQ because they represent the organization to the public, they interact with the highest number of people within and outside the organization and they set the tone for employee morale. Leaders with empathy are able to understand their employees’ needs and provide them with constructive feedback. Emotional Intelligence has become a vital part of how today's leaders meet the significant challenges they face.
