International audienceIn the nineteenth century, a conflict broke out over the harmful influence of industrial smoke coming from the line kilns on the Beaune vineyard. Based on studies by hygienists and chemists, vineyard owners and wine merchants claimed that it was the smoke from nearby industrial furnaces that harmed the quality of the wine products. The influence on the vines and on the taste of the wine would occur from the period of flowering of the vine to its period of maturation. The shutting down of lime kilns and factories that used coal became essential to regulate the harmfulness of smoke in the vineyard.
