Histoire universelle ou histoire globale ?

Abstract Some historians consider universal history as obsolete, because of its values considered Eurocentric and its methods considered outdated; the future would be global history. The book criticizes this thesis because of its underestimation of Germanic contributions and Chinese productions. Global history concerns only a limited period and a particular theme of human history. It cannot replace universal history as a horizon of totality of knowledge, but completes and perfects it by ridding it of dated representations. After recalling some semantic aspects and analyzing the narratives on the totality of the past written before 1870, this book studies universal histories from 1870 to 2000, the narratives of world and global history since 1950, the aspects of global history today and concludes with the "polybial question" that has structured the debates on the universality of the historical narrative for the last five centuries.Histoire universelle ou histoire globale ?, Paris, PUF, 2018. Résumé Certains historiens considèrent l'histoire universelle comme obsolète, à cause de ses valeurs jugées eurocentriques et de ses méthodes estimées dépassées ; l'avenir serait à l'histoire globale. L'ouvrage critique cette thèse en raison de sa sous-estimation des apports germaniques et des productions chinoises. L'histoire globale ne concerne qu'une période limitée et une thématique particulière de l'histoire de l'humanité. Elle ne peut remplacer l'histoire universelle comme horizon de totalité des connaissances, mais la complète et la parfait en la débarrassant de représentations datées.
