Averaging functions are used in many research areas such as decision making, image processing, pattern recognition and statistics. The basic averaging function, arithmetic mean, is most widely used in statistical quality control to monitor a particular quality characteristic. However, other averaging functions such as weighted averages can be used in control charting to improve the probability of detection in process level shifts when a process distribution deviates from the normality assumption.
