To assess correctly limitations in use, it is important to better understand how elastomers break by the propagation of an existing flaw and in particular whether such propagation can be predicted. To address this experimentally challenging problem, we propose in this thesis to characterize in-situ the microscopic behavior of soft elastomers at early stages of crack propagation with a variety of advanced optical methods. We first introduced spatially resolved multiple speckle diffusing wave spectroscopy (MSDWS) to map deformation rates in elastomers and applied it to investigate the strain rate field in front of a crack before propagation with an excellent time resolution.
