In plants, RNA silencing (RNAi) is an antiviral defense mechanism involving DCL proteins and their associated DRB proteins. To overcome RNAi, phytoviruses express viral suppressors RNA silencing, or VSRs. Beet yellow necrotic vein virus (BNYVV) RNA1 and RNA2 are sufficient to ensure infection on Nicotiana benthamiana and non-coding RNA3 (RNA3nc), derived from genomic RNA3 degradation by XRN4, is necessary for viral long distance movement on natural Beta host. The p14 protein is the VSR expressed by the BNYVV, essential for systemic movement. The p14BA2 mutant is unable to provide this movement but is complemented by the accumulation of ncRNA3.
