Crops are under constant threat from pathogenic microbes worldwide. In particular, the Xanthomonas genus encompasses bacterial pathogens capable of infecting over 400 plant species. Among them, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, the causal agent of the Black rot disease of Brassicaceae, represents the major bacterial pathogen of cabbages, radish, mustard etc. Because of its economic impact, Xcc quickly became a model for the study of bacterial phytopathogens.
