In Western Europe, the last centuries of the Middle Ages included affirmation of urban political communities and the "revolution of writing" ; the two phenomena being intertwined. This PhD thesis explores the relationship between an invention of new politics and the development of literacy in the small towns of medieval Rouergue in southwestern France. In this region, urban governments emerged during the thirteenth century, and the systematic study of the sources that remain sheds new light on the development of a government literacy in the urban Western Europe during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, far from the large cities that have attracted more attention from historians to this day.This documentation first allows us to observe...
