The interaction of solidification fronts with objects (droplets, bubbles, particles, or biological cells) is a common phenomenon encountered in a plethora of situations, ranging from industrial to natural occurrences, such as the formation ofsea ice, growth of single crystals, metallurgy, cryobiology, food science, and filtration or water purification. The process,though well-known, is complex and an unambiguous quantification of the mechanisms in situ is yet to be developed.
