In college, Henderson formed his own group The Collegians with bandmates Benny Carter and Rex Stewart who both went on to successful careers. Henderson’s arrangements in the 1930s can be heard on recordings by orchestras led by Jimmie Lunceford, Charlie Barnet, Benny Goodman, and his brother Fletcher. Also in the 1930s, Henderson fronted his own band (which included trumpeter and violinist Ray Nance) and played in the orchestras of Don Redman and Vernon Andrade. In the 1940s, after a stint in the army, Henderson worked again as an arranger for Fletcher then left to be an accompanist for vocalist Lena Horne. The 1950s and 1960s saw Henderson working for the most part as a leader of his own band until settling in Denver. Critics have rightly praised Horace Henderson as a more modern pianist than his brother, and while he is often overshadowed by his more famous brother as an arranger, Horace was an excellent arranger in his own right.Portions of the publicly available digital files for this transcript have been altered to restore them to their original state
