Acute wounds can be described as wounds that heal through the routine stages of inflammation followed by new tissue formation and finally remodelling which occur in a timely and efficient manner (Clark et al. 2020). Traumatic and surgical wounds, burns and abrasions are considered generally to be acute wounds (Sen et al. 2017). Chronic wounds can therefore be considered acute wounds initially but become chronic wounds when they fail to heal within a period of four to six weeks (Gottrup et al. 2010).
