Développement d'analyseur de chromatographie en phase gazeuse à base de composants MEMS pour l'exploration in-situ d'environnements planétaires

The search for organic molecules in the solar system is an important step in our understanding of the origins of life and the search for extraterrestrial life. To research and characterize this organic matter in the solar system, in situ chemical analysis is a necessary tool that complements remote observations. Among the analytical techniques used in this context, mass spectrometry alone or coupled with gas chromatography has been most often used since the Viking mission in 1976, whether for the study of the composition of the surface of Mars, atmospheres of Venus, Titan, or the surface of comets 67P.Gas chromatography was chosen for its analytical interest, namely to separate the components present in a gas mixture, and for its relative simplicity allowing its spatialization. But given the evolution of space missions and the resources that can be allocated to the operation of scientific instruments on board probes, space instruments aim to be miniaturized and consume fewer resources. Gas chromatography is no exception to this rule and the emergence of new technologies, such as MEMS, could allow in the years to come to drastically reduce the mass, the volume, and the energy required for the use. of this type of instrument, opening up prospects for use in a greater number of missions, or carrying small payloads.The objective of this thesis is to work on this miniaturization in use of MEMS technologies in an objective of spatialization for the exploration of the solar system. In this context, I studied and contributed to the improvement of the analytical performances of MEMS components necessary to carry out the chromatography analysis (i.e. injector, column, detectors) to lead to components that could be sent into a space instrument. I then worked on the development and testing of a first chromatography prototype bringing together the different components tested to assess the quality of the analysis obtained with this instrument. While improvements still need to be made with a view to real spatialization, this work has resulted in a prototype demonstrating the capacity of MEMS chromatography which can be adapted to spatial conditions, to perform efficient analyzes of organic molecules. This work has led to the implementation of technical studies aimed at developing a prototype closer to a space flight instrument.La recherche de molécules organiques dans le système solaire est une étape importante dans notre compréhension des origines de la vie et la recherche de vie extraterrestre. Pour rechercher et caractériser cette matière organique dans le système solaire, l'analyse chimique in situ est un outil nécessaire qui vient compléter les observations faites à distance. Parmi les techniques analytiques utilisées dans ce contexte, la spectrométrie de masse seule ou couplée à la chromatographie en phase gazeuse est le plus souvent utilisée depuis la mission Viking en 1976, que ce soit pour l'étude de la composition de la surface de Mars, des atmosphères de Vénus, Titan, ou de la surface de la comètes 67P.La chromatographie en phase gazeuse a été choisie pour son intérêt analytique, à savoir séparer les composants présents dans un mélange gazeux, et pour sa relative simplicité permettant sa spacialisation. Mais compte tenu de l'évolution des missions spatiales et des ressources qui peuvent être alouées au fonctionnement des instruments scientifiques à bord des sondes, les instruments spatiaux visent à être miniaturisés et consommer moins de resources. La chromatographie en phase gazeuse n'échappe pas à cette règle et l'émergence de nouvelles technologies, telles que les MEMS, pourrait permettre dans les années à venir de réduire drastiquement la masse, le volume, et l'énergie requise pour l'utilisation de ce type d'instrument, ouvrant des perspectives d'utilisation dans un nombre de missions plus nombreuses, ou embarquant des petites charges utiles.L'objectif de cette thèse est de travailler à cette miniaturisation en utilisation les technologies MEMS dans un objectif de spatialisation pour l'exploration du système solaire. Dans ce cadre, j'ai étudié et contribué à l'amélioration des performances analytiques de composants MEMS nécessaires à procéder à l'analyse chromatographie (i.e. injecteur, colonne, détecteurs) pour aboutir à des composants qui pourraient être envoyés dans un instrument spatial. J'ai ensuite travaillé au développement et aux tests d'un premier prototype de chromatographie rassemblant les différents composants testés pour évaluer la qualité de l'analyse obtenue avec cet instrument. Si des améliorations restent à effectuer en vue d'une réelle spatialisation, ce travail a abouti à un prototype démontrant la capacité d'un chromatographie MEMS pouvant être adapté aux conditions spatiales, à effectuer des analyses performantes de molécules organiques. Ce travail a permis de déboucher sur la mise en place actuellement d'études techniques visant à développer un prototype plus proche d'un instrument spatial de vol
