Étudiants, sitters, nouchi et bakoroman. Une approche comparée de la jeunesse en Afrique

International audienceFirstly, this contribution offers successive accounts of three ethnographies concerning “young people”, in Burkina Faso (Jacinthe Mozzocchetti, 2008, Être étudiant à Ouagadougou : itinérances, imaginaire et précarité), in Gambia (Paolo Gaibazzi, 2015, Bush Bound: Young Men and Rural Permanence in Migrant West Africa) and in the Ivory Coast (Sasha Newell, 2012, The Modernity Bluff: Crime, Consumption and Citizenship in Côte d’Ivoire).Secondly, a comparative parallel is drawn between these three books, with a view to formulating a few hypotheses on the implicit contours of “youth” that are sketched in them. Divided into recurring themes like political mobilisation, waiting and mobility, it shows that, far from only being a question of age, youth presents itself as an implicitly male category, which is designated as such only when it acquires a certain sociopolitical visibility and oppositional firepower. Finally, based on the author’s research among young people living on the streets in Burkina Faso (bakoroman), this article concludes by observing the “young” category’s recent intrusion into Burkina Faso’s political scene, to the point that a re-transcription of vernacular language seems to be asserting itself in the “zenna” written form.Dans un premier temps, cette contribution propose successivement le compte rendu de trois ethnographies portant sur des « jeunes », au Burkina Faso (Jacinthe Mozzocchetti, 2008, Être étudiant à Ouagadougou : itinérances, imaginaire et précarité), en Gambie (Paolo Gaibazzi, 2015, Bush bound : Young men and rural permanence in migrant West Africa) et en Côte d’Ivoire (Sasha Newell, 2012, The modernity bluff : Crime, consumption and citizenship in Côte d’Ivoire).Dans un second temps, un rapprochement comparatif est proposé entre ces trois ouvrages, visant à formuler quelques hypothèses sur les contours implicites de « la jeunesse » qui s’y dessinent. Décliné dans des thématiques récurrentes telles que la mobilisation politique, l’attente et la mobilité, il permet de faire apparaître que, loin de n’être qu’une question d’âge, la jeunesse se présente comme une catégorie implicitement masculine, qui n’est désignée comme telle que lorsqu’elle acquiert une certaine visibilité sociopolitique et une force de frappe oppositionnelle. Enfin, à partir des recherches de l’auteure auprès de jeunes vivant dans la rue au Burkina Faso — les bakoroman —, cet article se clôt sur le constat de l’intrusion récente de la catégorie « jeune » sur la scène politique burkinabè, au point qu’une retranscription dans la langue véhiculaire semble en train de s'imposer sous la graphie « zenna »
