We have used differential scanning calorimetry and thermometry techniques under applied magnetic field and compressive uniaxial stress to determine isothermal entropy and adiabatic temperature changes that quantify the caloric effects associated with the magnetostructural transition of an Fe49Rh51 alloy. It is found that the transition temperature increases with increasing compressive stress while it decreases for increasing tensile stress. This behavior gives rise to a conventional elastocaloric effect for compressive stresses in contrast to the reported inverse elastocaloric effect for tensile stresses.
