Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer widely used in various industrial fields (automotive, decoration, etc.). However, PMMA is known to have very poor adhesion to aluminum thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering (PVD). To ensure a good adhesion between PMMA and aluminum, the industrial partner uses a varnish deposited by wet coating process. This solution requires many preparation steps (chemical and electrostatic cleaning, substrate transfer to the coating reactor …) and it is a source of liquid and gaseous wastes. Therefore, it was necessary to consider a dry surface pre-treatment solution to improve the adhesive properties of PMMA and better understanding the polymer/metal adhesion mechanisms.
