National audienceOur paper aims at identifying the syntactic, semantic and discourse functions of en realité (lit. in reality) in contemporary French. En réalité shows two different realizations in our corpus (150 occurrences drawn from the newspaper Le Monde): either it constitutes an intraphrastic adjunct encoding a circumstantial complement (ER1), or it constitutes an extraphrastic adjunct encoding a sentence operator (ER2). Most occurrences of ER2 can be regarded as encoding an evidential modal localizing the source of evidence in the knowledge of reality and presupposing the existence of an alternative source evidence, different from reality and therefore fallacious.
