The work presented here is a brief description of the Remote Sensing of the Oceans, also known as Satellite Oceanography or Space Oceanography. At the same time this work discuss how Remote Sensing is utilized for studying or monitoring oceanic processes and features in a continuous, global and synoptic way at time and space scales difficult to be resolved by the conventional oceanography. The satellites and sensors mostly employed nowadays in oceanography are described with their applications. In a country like Brazil, with a large territorial sea and coastline, the investments in conventional oceanography are still small.
