Internal combustion engines (ICE) produce emissions that are harmful to the environment and human health. Strict governmental regulations put in place to reduce these harmful emissions have driven engine advancements such as high-pressure direct-injection (HPDI) of natural gas (NG) technology developed by Westport Fuel Systems (WFS). Because NG has a lower flame temperature than diesel, nitrogen oxides NO and NO₂ (NOₓ), can be slightly reduced; nevertheless, they are still a problematic harmful emission in HPDI engines.
