Visual inspection is the basis of any in situ assessment of timber structures aimed at providing information about structural soundness of a construction. It must evaluate the original characteristics of the structural system and of each member as well as any incurred modification, such as repairs and treatments, deterioration, structural movements and damage. The paper describes criteria developed by a Cost Action team for the definition of “inspection templates” to guide and support inspection operations
