Positive poiliteness strategies used by Jimmy Fallon in the Tonight Show's YouTube Channel

Jimmy Fallon is a very popular talk show host among the public because he is famous for his image of good manners. Politeness is very important in maintaining relationships with others and considering the feelings of others by not saying rude words. Positive politeness is needed in daily interactions, especially the act of speaking, therefore the writer focuses on one topic, namely positive politeness. The object of this research is the interview between Jimmy Fallon and the guest stars on The Tonight Show. This made the writer interested in analyzing the following two questions: (1) What are the types of positive politeness strategies used by Jimmy Fallon and guest stars in The Tonight Show's interview? and (2) What factors are influences the choice of positive politeness strategies applied by Jimmy Fallon and guest stars in The Tonight Show's interview? In answering these two questions the writer used positive politeness analysis strategies based on the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The method used in this research is a qualitative approach that is descriptive analysis, which is a research that provides an objective description. There are 112 data and 14 of 15 types of positive politeness strategies found in Jimmy Fallon's interview with guest stars on The Tonight Show. There are 50 positive politeness strategies used by Jimmy Fallon with dominant exaggerate strategies while the guest stars are 62 positive politeness strategies with dominant exaggerate and give (or ask for) reasons and they applied those strategies by considering the payoffs and the circumstances: sociological variables
