Księdza Jana Ciemniewskiego koncepcja wychowania do cnót roztropności, męstwa i wstrzemięźliwości

The aim of the article is to introduce the scientific and journalistic life and acquis of Father Jan Ciemniewski (1866–1947). The basis meant for developing this publication are the main works of the Polish priest. Philosophical and theological elaborations of issues that this scholar was considering, created when he was alive as well as after his death, were also used here. Ciemniewski was a priest interested in philosophy, theology and pedagogy. He was a creator of the philosophical upbringing system based on the classical Aristotelian-Thomistic concept of the nature of the human gist and ethics assuming the necessity of upbringing a human by forming the cardinal virtues in him. He made the mind-improving virtue of prudence the special object of his interests, but also the virtues of fortitude and abstinence. He claimed that in upbringing, not only of children and teenagers but also of the adult part of the society, we have to pay attention to fighting alcoholism and impurity because they are the ones that endanger the existence of individuals and the nation. He wrote that alcohol not only weakens a person’s will, but also damages his nervous system, and contributes to the material impoverishment of the person who abuses the drink. In developing his concept of education, Ciemniewski drew on the rich heritage of European thought. He was also interested in experimental psychology and drew inspiration from Polish psychologists (J. Ochorowicz, R. Radziwiłłowicz, T. Jaroszyński). He criticised ethical liberalism, materialism and hedonism. According to this scholar, proper upbringing consists in improving the human intellect and strengthening the power of human will.Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie informacji o życiu i dorobku naukowym oraz publicystycznym ks. Jana Ciemniewskiego (1866–1947). Podstawą źródłową służącą opracowaniu niniejszej publikacji są główne dzieła polskiego kapłana. Posiłkowano się również opracowaniami filozoficznymi i teologicznymi zagadnień, które rozważał opisywany uczony, powstałymi zarówno w okresie jego aktywności naukowej i duszpasterskiej, jak i po jego śmierci. Ciemniewski był kapłanem interesującym się filozofią i teologią oraz pedagogiką. Był twórcą systemu filozofii wychowania opartego na klasycznej, arystotelesowsko-tomistycznej koncepcji natury ludzkiej osoby oraz etyce zakładającej konieczność wychowania człowieka poprzez kształtowanie w nim cnót kardynalnych. Szczególnym przedmiotem zainteresowań uczynił doskonalącą rozum cnotę roztropności, a także cnotę męstwa i umiarkowania, nazywaną przez siebie cnotą wstrzemięźliwości. Twierdził, że w wychowaniu nie tylko dzieci i młodzieży, ale także i dorosłej części społeczeństwa, należy zwracać uwagę na walkę z alkoholizmem i nieczystością, ponieważ one głównie zagrażają egzystencji jednostek i narodu. Pisał, że alkohol nie tylko osłabia wolę człowieka, ale także uszkadza jego system nerwowy oraz przyczynia się do zubożenia materialnego osoby nadużywającej tego trunku. Opracowując swoją koncepcję wychowania, Ciemniewski korzystał z bogatego dorobku myśli europejskiej. Interesował się także psychologią eksperymentalną oraz czerpał inspiracje od polskich psychologów (J. Ochorowicz, R. Radziwiłłowicz, T. Jaroszyński). Krytykował liberalizm etyczny, materializm, hedonizm. Według tego uczonego właściwe wychowanie polega na usprawnianiu ludzkiego intelektu i wzmacnianiu siły woli człowieka
