Inserted in the socio-education debate, this article presents a historical overview of the restriction and deprivation of freedom policies for adolescents and young people in Brazil, through a review of legislation and scientifi c literature. Adopting a critical perspective, the article begins with the historical background of the Code of Minors, from the Proclamation of the Republic. Then, it discusses the Minors Code of 1927, and its reformulation in 1979, highlighting the Assistance Service for Minors (SAM), the National Foundation for the Welfare of Minors (FUNABEM) and the Foundation for the Welfare of Minors (FEBEM). Subsequently, it shares the process of rupture with minorist conceptions, resulting in the Child and Adolescent Statute...
