THE CHALLENGES OF ONLINE CONSULTATIONS FACED BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS ON THEIR THESIS WRITING

Key words: Thesis writing, Thesis online consultation, Challenges In order to graduate and get a bachelor's degree, each student is required to write a thesis. Students need to have access to revision advice from their supervisor while they are working on their theses. Face-to-face consultation was switched to online one during the COVID-19 epidemic. Accordingly, there must be challenges that students must face that have an impact on their psychological well-being. Therefore, this research was conducted to discover how online consultation impacted psychological condition of English department’s students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This following research question is: “What are the difficulties that faced by students on their thesis writing process in online thesis consultation?” and “How online thesis consultation impacts English department students in writing their thesis?” Therefore, the objective of the research was to find the impact of online thesis consultation during the pandemic on faced by English department students in writing their thesis and to describe the difficulties that faced by students on their thesis writing process in online thesis consultation. This study used a descriptive qualitative method using interview as its instrument. As participants, there are nine students from the English department at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung who authored theses during that time period. The data was analyzed using Brown's (2007) theory of emotional variables. The researcher used triangulation to give data validation. The result showed online consultation gave English department students challenges while writing their thesis because they had poor self-esteem, communicated their troubles, took the risk to write quickly, suffered from anxiety, and sought motivation from others.
