Abrupt weaning of four-week-old pigs is associated with multiple stressors. Housing pigs in intact litters is a way to reduce the stress associated with moving and mixing of unfamiliar pigs. Furthermore, higher weaning weight may improve pigs’ robustness against postweaning stressors.
