This paper explores the role of ambiguity in Pindar’s Pythian 3. It argues that ambiguity is a strategy used by Pindar to find a fine balance between different linguistic, social, and religious pressures; ambiguity allows Pindar to absolve his encomiastic duty (and possibly go above his duty) while facing complex and contrasting pressures from his patron on one hand and the social and religious norms on the other.
