In this paper we propose a methodology to estimate the energy consumption of application software independent of the infrastructure on which the software is deployed. Our methodology make a distinction between the usage of computational resources by an application and the unit energy consumption of each resource. In this way, usage resources and unit energy consumption can be measured independently. We are validating our methodology on a set of commonly used SAP transactions of a large multi-national company operating in the field of oil and gas.
