DLC coatings for light alloys

The past 10 years has seen a steady lowering of the friction coefficient thanks to innovations in applied surface science and coating technology. Friction coefficients below 0.01 have been observed for certain MoS2 and diamond-like carbon DLC coatings, but only in ultrahigh vacuum. DLC coatings have been the subject of extensive investigation in recent years because of its potential of attaining highly desirable properties of technological interest. Many authors have noted the potential of DLC coatings as a protective coating; furthermore, the unique combination of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, low friction, chemical inertness and electrical insulation make DLC increasingly the preferred candidate for wear-resistant and protective coatings. DLC coatings were prepared by a PACVD process on aluminum alloys. The results on the corrosion and friction behavior of DLC coated aluminum alloys will be presented and discussed
