In parallel with the developments in imaging modalities, image-guided surgery (IGS) can now provide the surgeon with high quality three-dimensional images depicting human anatomy. Although IGS is now in widely use in neurosurgery, there remain some limitations that must be overcome before it can be employed in more general minimally invasive procedures.
