Investigação das crenças sobre o clareamento dentário entre os alunos e graduados em odontologia

The practice of tooth whitening is still linked to some beliefs spread commercially and popularly, which are not always scientifically based. In view of this, this study aims to verify the degree of information of dentistry students and dentists and compare them. The inquiries involve subjects about supervised and in-office bleaching treatment through the application of a remote questionnaire containing related questions: the use of LED, performance of a white diet, need for reservoirs in the bleaching tray, use of anti-inflammatory drugs, use of bleaching agents "over the counter", the possibility of performing whitening in patients who are still undergoing orthodontic treatment, the time interval indicated between whitening appointments and in relation to the waiting time for replacement of restorations after the end of treatment. The questionnaire was answered by 29 academics regularly enrolled in a dentistry course (AC) in Brazil and 39 dentists with active enrollment at the Conselho Federal de Odontologia (CD), where they are not assigned to a specific region or institution. in Excel spreadsheets for further descriptive analysis and statistical treatment o and comparison between the two groups (AC and CD) through the application of the t test (α = 0.05). For most of the questions, similar answers were obtained between the two groups, except for the questions regarding the time interval indicated between in-office whitening appointments (p < 0.01); regarding the use of anti-inflammatory drugs prior to this procedure in order to reduce postoperative sensitivity (p < 0.01); and in relation to the waiting time for replacement of restorations after completion of treatment (p < 0.01). In addition, the research also showed that many "myths" preached about tooth whitening are still widespread, such as the impossibility of whitening the teeth of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and the need for a white diet during treatment, beliefs which should be demystified for the realization of an evidence-based dentistry.A prática do clareamento dental ainda se encontra atrelada a algumas crenças difundidas comercialmente e popularmente, que nem sempre são cientificamente embasadas. Visto isso, esse estudo tem como objetivo verificar o grau de informação dos alunos de odontologia e dentistas graduados e compará-los. As indagações envolvem assuntos sobre o tratamento clareador supervisionado e de consultório através da aplicação de um questionário remoto contendo perguntas relacionadas: a utilização de LED, realização de dieta branca, necessidade de reservatórios na moldeira de clareamento, uso de anti-inflamatórios, utilização dos clareadores “over the counter", a possibilidade de se realizar o clareamento em pacientes que ainda estão sob tratamento ortodôntico, o intervalo de tempo indicado entre as consultas de clareamento e em relação ao tempo de espera para substituição de restaurações após a finalização do tratamento. Esse questionário foi respondido por 29 acadêmicos regularmente matriculados em algum curso de odontologia (AC) no Brasil e 39 dentistas com inscrição ativas no Conselho Federal de Odontologia (CD), onde os mesmos não se atribuem a região ou instituição específicas. Os dados obtidos foram registrados em planilhas no Excel para posterior análise descritiva e tratamento estatístico e comparação entre os dois grupos (AC e CD) através da aplicação do teste t (α = 0,05). Para a maioria das perguntas foram obtidas respostas semelhantes entre os dois grupos, exceto para as questões em relação ao intervalo de tempo indicado entre as consultas de clareamento em consultório (p < 0,01); quanto ao uso de anti- inflamatórios previamente a esse procedimento no intuito de diminuir a sensibilidade pós operatória (p < 0,01); e em relação ao tempo de espera para substituição de restaurações após a finalização do tratamento (p < 0,01). Além disso, a pesquisa ainda mostrou que muitos “mitos” pregados sobre o clareamento dentário ainda são difundidos, como a impossibilidade de clarear os dentes de pacientes que realizam tratamento ortodôntico e sobre a necessidade de uma dieta branca durante o tratamento, crenças as quais devem ser desmistificados para realização de uma odontologia baseada em evidências
