Tenir le rôle de Gilet jaune en Belgique : conditions d’un militantisme démocratique transnational

International audienceThis paper extends and shifts the focus of research on Yellow Vests (Gilets jaunes [GJ]) to individuals who claim to be GJ in Belgium. Based on this borderline case, it analyses the conditions of a singularity: the triggering and the permanence of a transnational engagement in a national context of low-intensity mobilisation. It is based on a multi-methods fieldwork, using observations, online monitoring, focus groups and interviews. The paper identifies three forms of commitment: desperate, altruistic and declassified. It notes how one becomes a GJ from or in Belgium, but also how access to the Parisian acts works as a rite of initiation. At the level of individuals, it is through a role performance that such post-institutional and anti-representation democratic activism is maintained over time. Finally, the paper highlights how the GJ has become a political symbol, that appears to be for individuals an available and a meaningful accessory beyond its original context.Cet article décentre et prolonge la recherche sur le mouvement des Gilets jaunes (GJ) pour s’intéresser à des individus se revendiquant GJ en Belgique. À travers ce cas limite, il analyse les conditions d’une singularité : le déclenchement et le maintien d’un engagement transnational dans un contexte de faible mobilisation nationale. Il se fonde sur une enquête pluri-méthodique, à partir d’observations, suivi en ligne, focus groups et entretiens. L’article dégage trois formes d’engagement, désespéré, altruiste et déclassé. Il note comment on devient GJ de ou en Belgique, mais aussi en quoi l’accès aux actes parisiens agit comme un rite d’initiation. À l’échelle des individus, c’est par la performance d’un rôle qu’un militantisme démocratique, post-institutionnel et anti-représentatif, se maintient sur le temps long.
