Etudier la socialisation langagière des étudiants internationaux par des ateliers cartographiques

International audienceThis paper will report on an interdisciplinary project (language sciences, geography, computer science) on the learning of international students during their study abroad. We seek to understand how spatial practices participate in language socialization and thus in the enrichment of linguistic, social and cultural repertoires. Spatial practices deserve to be better considered in the field of language learning (Benson, 2021). The spatial environment of everyday interaction must be understood as a social construction: participants use the space they have available while creating spaces through their discourse and interactions (Jucker et al. 2018). The spatial dimension of everyday life, in its materiality, is at once a condition for action, a structure of control, a limit, and an invitation to action (Santos 1997: 228).In our project, we document spatial practices through participatory workshops that we conduct with students and that aim (1) to design the prototype of an application that allows them to share their experiences and (2) to set up a reflexive activity, based on cartographic visualizations, on their practices and on places. The hypothesis is that the traces, which can be reactivated, can generate other ways of doing things, enriching the repertoires of action of everyone.It will be a question of showing how this device, as a site of semiotic production, allows us to study the process of linguistic socialization and thus to question the degrees of acculturation to situated social groups (Duff, 2019), in order to take into account the diversity of lived experiences faced with certain hegemonic discourses of globalization.La communication se propose de rendre compte d’un projet interdisciplinaire (sciences du langage, géographie, informatique) en cours sur les apprentissages d’étudiants internationaux lors de leur séjour d’études à l’étranger. Nous cherchons à comprendre comment les pratiques spatiales participent à la socialisation langagière et ainsi à l'enrichissement des répertoires linguistiques, sociaux, culturels. Les pratiques spatiales méritent d’être mieux envisagées dans le domaine de l’apprentissage des langues (Benson, 2021). L'environnement spatial de l'interaction quotidienne doit être compris comme une construction sociale : les participant.e.s utilisent l’espace qu’ils ont à disposition tout en créant des espaces par leurs discours et leurs interactions (Jucker et al. 2018). La dimension spatiale du quotidien, dans sa matérialité, est à la fois une condition pour l'action, une structure de contrôle, une limite et une invitation à l'action (Santos, 1997 : 228).Dans notre projet, nous documentons les pratiques spatiales par le biais d’ateliers participatifs que nous menons avec des étudiants et qui ont pour but (1) de concevoir le prototype d’une application permettant de partager ses expériences et (2) de mettre en place une activité réflexive, à partir de visualisations cartographiques, sur leurs pratiques et sur les lieux. L’hypothèse est que les traces, réactivables, peuvent engendrer d’autres manières de faire, enrichissant les répertoires d’action de chacun.Il s’agira de montrer comment ce dispositif, comme site de production sémiotique, nous permet d’étudier le processus de socialisation langagière et ainsi de questionner les degrés d’acculturation à des groupes sociaux situés (Duff, 2019), pour prendre en compte la diversité des expériences vécues face à certains discours hégémoniques de globalisation
