International audienceIn spoken language, a significant proportion of words are produced with missing or underspecifiedphonetic forms which is a process called phonetic reduction. This study aims to better understand howit works. We analyzed 13 reduced forms (words and word combinations) in a corpus of Frenchconversations. Using an Enriched Orthographic Transcription for the extraction of reduced items, weobserved their distribution and duration in a corpus of conversational speech. The results show thatthe frequency of item reduction is variable and depends on the item itself but also on the speaker.Post-hoc analyses revealed a weak correlation between the rate of reduction of each speaker andhis/her rate in the corpus.
