Abstract Background The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce reserve and resilience as novel concepts in chronic kidney disease (CKD) research and present baseline data from a unique prospective cohort study designed to characterize recovery from functional decline after a health event. Methods The Physical REsilience Prediction in Advanced REnal Disease (PREPARED) study recruited a national, prospective cohort of Veterans ≥70 years old with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2, prior nephrology care, and at high risk for hospitalization.
