The three larval instars of Hydrocanthus socius Sahlberg, 1844 are described and illustrated for the first time, including morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphus. Larvae of this species can be separated from those of Hydrocanthus sharpiZimmermann, 1928 by the dorsal color pattern, H. sharpi being entirely brown, and H. socius testaceous with many small dark maculae. Regarding chaetotaxy, H. socius differs from H. sharpi in the length of seta MX11, the position of seta LA3, and the number of additional setae on trochanter.
