A correlation between parents' socioeconomic status and students' English achievement

This research aimed to find out a correlation between parents' socioeconomic status and students' English achievement at the seventh and eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Lembah Melintang, Pasaman Barat, Sumatera Barat. This research used the correlation study with a quantitative research approach. The sample was 70 students that were taken using purposive sampling. The instruments used were documentation to acquire information about students' English achievement and questionnaires to collect data from students regarding their parents' socioeconomic status. The data ware analyzed by using Pearson-Product moment correlation in SPSS 23.0. Based on the data analysis, the parents' socioeconomic status was categorized in the middle level. The correlation between students' English achievement and parents' socioeconomic status of SMP Negeri 1 Lembah Melintang seventh and eighth grade students can be classified as fair (0,434) correlation with the students' English achievement. This research shows the effect of parents’ socioeconomic status on students’ English achievement because parents’ socioeconomic status supports students to get better achievement
