Metal dusting is a kind of catastrophic carburization of iron or nickel-base alloys. This phenomenon occurs when the gas mixture is carbon-rich, at temperatures higher than 900°C. The aim of this work consists in forming a protective oxide scale against carburization on the surface of model alloys. In the present work, four model alloys (Fe26Cr, Fe26Cr2Si, Ni25Cr and Ni25CrSi) were pre-oxidized at 900 and 950 °C in a high oxygen containing gas (dry air) or in a low containing oxygen gas mixture (N2-5%H2). Thus, blank and pre-oxidized alloys were exposed to a highly carburizing environment (Ar-10%CH4), at 900 °C.
