Background and objectives: Individuals are thought to be biased towards approaching positive stimuli and avoiding negative stimuli. Yet, it is unclear whether this general pattern applies to all stimulus classes or whether biases are more specific. We expected significant approach biases towards two types of positive stimuli, appetitive foods and butterflies; and avoidance biases away from two types of negative stimuli, spoiled foods and spiders. Methods: A touchscreen-based Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT), using hand gestures toward or away from stimuli assessed biases.
