The Mediterranean area can be seen as the place where the retrospective views continue to triumph over prospects and it becomes difficult to look beyond. At the same time, stereotypes and myths continue to be extremely attractive, identifying the Mediterranean as the site of memories and origins, where amongst the diversity it is possible to trace a sense of historical, cultural, genetic and physical belonging. What can design do for sustainable touristic development in general, and in the Mediterranean in particular? It can certainly work on three different levels: - the theme of identity (and differences), i.e. looking into ‘what’. - the theme of relationships, i.e. ‘how’. - the theme of visibility, i.e. ‘in which way’ and ‘for whom’
