Liver disease has become a major global health and economic burden due to its broad spectrum of diseases, multiple causes and difficult treatment. Most liver diseases progress to end-stage liver disease, which has a large amount of matrix deposition that makes it difficult for the liver and hepatocytes to regenerate. Liver transplantation is the only treatment for end-stage liver disease, but the shortage of suitable organs, expensive treatment costs and surgical complications greatly reduce patient survival rates.
