The increasing use of low-viscosity lubricants in order to reduce the friction in machine elements such as rolling bearings is leading to increased operation in the mixed or boundary lubrication regime. The associated wear can lead to an earlier failure of tribological systems. In this context, a detailed wear simulation offers great potential with regard to the design of machine elements as well as the calculation of lifetimes.
