This study evaluated whether the straw burial and alternative wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation could improve the root activity, yield, and water utilization efficiency (WUE) of rice. Accordingly, we conducted a field experiment with three straw burial levels, i.e., with no straw burial (NSB), low straw burial 300 kg.ha−1 (LSB), and dense straw burial 800 kg.ha−1 (DSB), and three irrigation regimes, i.e., alternate wetting/moderate drying (AWMD), alternate wetting/severe drying (AWSD), and alternate wetting/critical drying (AWCD).
