In this study dropping out of college represents a pivotal point in a student's study career at which his/her study career can take either an upward or downward trend. Ending up in a study program below the university level or entering the workforce without the status provided by higher education is interpreted as a downward career path. By contrast, transfer within the academic domain is interpreted either as a gain or loss depending on whether the student moves upwards or downwards in the status hierarchy based on the differential prestige of various study fields and institutions of higher education.
