Intersubjective contributions on the development of teachers' intrasubjectivity in a continuing teacher education program

More specifically, the investigation focuses on advising sessions with his advisor and how she mediates his development in order to improve his teaching practice. PDE is a program that lasts four semesters when the teacher must attend some courses and develop research, which is divided in four parts/steps: a Research Project, a Teaching Unit (TU), the implementation of the TU, and a Final Paper about the research. For the purpose of this stud, all of those steps were based on works developed by Lantolf and Thorne (2006, 2007) underpinned with Vigotsky s (1991, 1992, 1995, 1997, 2008) Sociocultural Theory, through the concepts of mediation, internalization, zone of proximal development and concept development. Furthermore, having Johnson s (2009), Johnson and Golombek s (2011) discussions on teacher education, this dissertation has the objectives of identifying contributions of intersubjective relations into an English as a foreign language PDE-teacher s intrasubjectivity. Also, more specific objectives are to identify the EFL teaching conceptions the participant brings to the PDE context; to realize if the participant s discourse (by means of his written productions or interactions in advising sessions) reverberates mediations brought about by the advising sessions with the teacher educator; to check if the participant s productions throughout the PDE course suggest changes in his teaching conceptions. In order to collect data for the investigation, all the advising sessions for each step of the Program were audio-recorded and transcribed. Additionally, the researcher also asked participants to fill in an ethic form and to answer a questionnaire about their conceptions on language, social practice, a good teacher, student and class. After transcribing the advising sessions, the most recurrent aspects discussed during the advising sessions were elicited, bearing in mind the demands for the research questions. Participant s productions such as the Research Project, TU, and Final Paper comprise the research corpus as well. Each period was analyzed separately, but data stemmed from each of those four periods articulated information to answer every single research question. Results showed that Everard s conceptions are erroneous and vague, opposed to DCE (Paraná, 2008). These misunderstandings on the concept of language and language as social practice characterize, as Vygotsky (1991, 1992, 2008) defends, empty verbalism. His empty verbalism indicates that he needs a more experienced partner to help him understand the scientific concept. During the advising sessions, the Teacher Educator (TE) tried to mediate Everard s development through questioning his actions, concepts and practices. Most of the intrasubjectivity presented in transcriptions from the advising sessions do not supply Everard with possibilities of reverberations. As a matter of fact, he does not reverberate any discourse brought from the mediations during the advising sessions. Furthermore, Everard s conceptions are not truly changed, since in his Final Paper he does not reveal any alteration in his intrasubjectivity regarding the teaching of vocabulary, which he considers fully necessary so that students can learn English. He wants to teach lists of vocabulary to be memorized. What he does not understand is that there is no benefit in memorizing words out of a context. This is not the purpose of teaching English as a social practice. Finally, putting aside the apparently negative results concerning the PDE-teacher s development, the most significant achievement, to my point of view, was the one regarding the opportunity to verify to which extent advising practice really mediated and favored advisee s construction of new zones of development. The results of this research surely contributed for my personal growth as a professor and teacher educator in terms of being more critical and concerned to education as a whole.O presente estudo traz uma investigação sobre o processo de formação continuada de um professor de Língua Inglesa como língua estrangeira Everard no Programa de Desenvolvimento Estadual (PDE) dos professores do estado do Paraná, fornecido pelo governo estadual. Mais especificamente, a investigação tem seu foco nas sessões de orientação com a formadora de professores e como ela medeia o desenvolvimento do professor, para aperfeiçoamento da sua prática pedagógica. O PDE constitui um Programa de duração de quarto semestres, em que o professor deve participar de cursos de formação e desenvolver uma pesquisa dividida em quarto partes, a saber: Projeto de Pesquisa, Unidade Didática (UD), implementação da UD e Artigo Científico. Todos esses passos foram baseados em estudos desenvolvidos por Lantolf e Thorne (2006, 2007) fundamentados na Teoria Sociocultural de Vygotsky (1991, 1992, 1995, 1997, 2008) por meio dos conceitos de mediação, internalização, zona de desenvolvimento proximal e desenvolvimento de conceitos. Ademais, considerando as discussões de Johnson (2009) e, Johnson e Golombek (2011) sobre formação de professores, esta tese tem por objetivos identificar as contribuições das relações intersubjetivas na intrasubjetividade do professor de Língua Inglesa como língua estrangeira. Ademais, objetivos mais específicos tratam de identificar as concepções que o participante traz para o contexto do PDE; perceber se o discurso do participante (por meio das produções escritas e/ou das interações nas sessões de orientação) reverberam as mediações realizadas pela formadora de professores; verificar se as produções, do participante, durante o PDE, sugerem mudanças nas concepções de ensino. Para a coleta de dados, todas as sessões de orientação para cada fase do Programa foram gravadas e transcritas posteriormente. Além disso, a pesquisadora também solicitou ao participante que preenchesse um formulário com informações profissionais pessoais, e respondesse um questionários sobre concepções de língua, prática social, um bom professor, aluno e aula. Após as transcrições das sessões de orientação, os aspectos mais recorrentes foram identificados, tendo em mente a necessidade de responder as perguntas de pesquisa. As produções do participante, tais como: Projeto de Pesquisa, unidade Didática e Artigo Final também constituíram o corpus da pesquisa. Cada período foi analisado separadamente, mas os dados provenientes de cada período articularam informações para responder cada uma das perguntas de pesquisa. Os resultados mostraram que as concepções do Everard são errôneas, vagas e opostas ao que pressupões as DCE (Paraná, 2008). Esses equívocos, quanto às concepções de língua e língua como prática social, caracterizam o que Vygotsky (1991, 1992, 2008) chama de, verbalismo vazio. Seu verbalismo vazio indica a necessidade de um par mais experiente para auxiliá-lo a compreender conceitos científicos. Durante as sessões de orientação, a formadora de professores tentou mediar o desenvolvimento do Everard por meio de questionamentos a respeito das suas atitudes, concepções e práticas. Muito da intrasubjetividade apresentada nas transcrições das sessões de orientação não forneceu subsídios para possíveis reverberações do Everard. De fato, ele não reverberou nada resultante das mediações realizadas nas sessões de orientação. Ainda, as concepções do Everard não mudaram necessariamente, uma vez que seu Artigo não revelou nenhuma mudança intrasubjetiva com respeito ao ensino de vocabulário, que ele julga altamente necessário para os alunos aprenderem a Língua Inglesa. Ele considera ensinar listas de palavras para serem decoradas. Entretanto o que ele não considera é que não há benefício em apenas memorizar palavra fora de um contexto. Este não é o objetivo do ensino da língua inglesa como prática social. Finalmente, desconsiderando os aparentes resultados negativos da pesquisa com relação ao desenvolvimento do professor PDE, o resultado mais significativo, do meu ponto de vista, refere-se à oportunidade de verificar até que ponto a prática da orientação realmente medeia e favorece a criação de novas zonas de desenvolvimento de um orientando. Os resultados dessa pesquisa, com certeza, contribuíram para meu crescimento pessoal como formadora de professores, para me tornar mais crítica e ocupada da educação como um tod
