Ursula K. Le Guin: otherworldly literature for nonhuman times

Le Guin, são elas AMão Esquerda da Escuridão (1969), The Word for World is Forest(1974, sem tradução para o português) e Os Despossuídos (1976) com oobjetivo de identificar se estes trabalhos desafiam alguns dos valoresque nos trouxeram ao Antropoceno, a nova Época Geológica em quenos encontramos (Zalasiewicz, J. et al., 2014). O argumento quedesenvolvo envolve a ideia de que a literatura de fora-da-terra de LeGuin reflete e ressoa com este momento nosso, quando fica claro quenão é mais possível fingir que (1) os usos instrumentais da natureza, emnome do progresso, não têm consequências; e (2) que as fronteiras queos humanos ergueram contra seres e coisas não humanas são reais. Usotrês e não apenas um livro porque, diante dos desafios do Antropoceno,que incluem mudanças climáticas, a acidificação dos oceanos, perda dabiodiversidade, entre outras questões, cada livro explora maneirasdiferentes de lidar com desafios parecidos. Desta forma, as obraspodem, juntas, colaborar com o nosso processo de pensar sobre osdesafios listados acima. Para desenvolver a análise, uso a Teoria daSacola , da própria Le Guin, assim como teorias da virada nãohumana ,que levam em conta a nossa transição do Holoceno para oAntropoceno, a era do mundo marcada pelos humanos. Leio ostrabalhos de Le Guin tendo em mente, principalmente, as teoriasarticuladas por Donna J. Haraway, Karen Barad, Jane Bennett, GloriaAnzaldúa e Greta Gaard. Os planetas onde as três tramas se passam sãomarcados por extremos: invernos rigorosos e ininterruptos, terrasinférteis, falta d água e a abundância esmagadora de árvores são algunsdos elementos com os quais as personagens têm que lidar. Osprotagonistas precisam, com frequência, resistir a mudanças, lutar contraopressores e implicar-se em colaborações humanas e não humanas paragarantir a prosperidade de ambos. Informada por uma perspectiva nãohumanae ecofeminista, investigo como os habitantes desses planetasdesenvolvem e utilizam uma ética que pode nos ser útil, noAntropoceno, para continuarmos como espécie e para coexistir comcorpos e coisas não humanas nesta Terra.Abstract : This study examines three of Ursula K. Le Guin s novels, namely TheLeft Hand of Darkness (1969), The Word for World is Forest (1974),and The Dispossessed (1976), with the aim of finding out whether theseworks challenge some of the values that have led us into theAnthropocene, our new Geological Epoch (Zalasiewicz, J. et al., 2014).The argument I make is that Le Guin s otherworldly literature resonateswith and reflects this moment of ours, when it becomes clear thathumans can no longer pretend (1) that instrumental uses of nature in thename of progress do not have consequences, and (2) that the bordershumans have effected against nonhuman beings and things hold true. Iuse three and not one novel alone because, in view of the challenges ofthe Anthropocene, which include climate change, the acidification of theoceans, biodiversity loss, and so on, each work tackles different ways ofdealing with similar challenges, so the novels can, together, collaboratewith thinking the aforementioned issues. To develop the analysis, I useLe Guin s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction and nonhuman turn theories that take into account our transition from the Holocene Epochinto the Anthropocene, the age of the world marked by humans. I readLe Guin s novels especially against theories developed by Donna J.Haraway, Karen Barad, Jane Bennett, Gloria Anzaldúa, and GretaGaard. The planets where the three novels are set are marked byextremes: severe and continuous winters, barren lands, water shortage,and the blinding abundance of trees are some of the elements charactershave to deal with. The protagonists often need to resist change, fight offoppressors, and engage in human and nonhuman collaborations for bothrealms to thrive. Informed by a nonhuman, ecofeminist perspective, Iinvestigate how these planets inhabitants develop and engage in ethicsthat may be useful for us, in the Anthropocene, to both exist as a speciesand coexist with nonhuman bodies here on Earth
