In this article we try to answer the question related to the extent to which the literary canon matters for lessons in German studies. Having this in mind the author of this article considers the question of the necessity of canon selection and its importance. Hence I try to define the literary canon to be considered in terms of the dilemmas regarding openness and closeness, convertibility and stiffness. Additionally, a possible flexibility of the canon includingthe interests and needs of the scholars shall be considered. The article proves that the canon has to be opened under special observance of Children’s and Youth Literature, following the Literary Didactics in the German speaking countries.Publishe
