Births, TFR and cohorts’s fertility in Greece, past and present (in Greek)

Discussions regarding the demographic problem in Greece are increasingly focused on the limited number of births and on the decades-long low Total Fertility Rates (<1.5 children per woman), both of which are significantly different to those of the first post-war decades. The decline of births comes as a result of the significant post-war changes in reproductive behaviors, which are also reflected in numerous demographic indicators. Reference to them is particularly useful to comprehend how out of 1.545 million births during 1956-1965 we expect 835 thousand in 2016-2025, as well as how from 2.25 children per woman in the 1930’s cohorts we will have less than 1.5 in the younger generations (women born around 1985, i.e. the granddaughters of the previous ones). Reference to them is additionally useful to policymakers, in order to promote the adoption of specific measures that will facilitate the increase of births and fertility in a particularly difficult environment.
