The Social Policy of a Large Industrial Company in a Low Population Density Territory: General Motors in Ponte de Sor – Museography Suggestion

Dissertação de Mestrado em Património Cultural e Museologia apresentada à Faculdade de LetrasIndustrial Heritage, due to being one of the last types of heritage to be recognized, still struggles with negative connotations that the general population still associates with industrial spaces, such as: places of social and union conflicts, polluting agents and urban degradation, especially at the time of their abandonment. Even so, there have been several spaces that have been the subject of restoration and adaptation projects over the years to develop industrial museums there or for new uses (depending on their size, conservation conditions and functionality).Intervention in industrial spaces - and their own reconversion - depend on the conservation and history they represent in the territory in which they are inserted - or affective value - that their memory has in the communities. For the valorization of the Industrial Heritage of the object of study of this work and the memories of those who passed through it, some questions arise: What is intended with the valorization, protection and musealization of the former INLAN/DELPHI Factory space?; Will the investment and adaptation to new spaces de-characterize the industrial heritage, making its musealization no longer make sense?; How will the new function of the old industrial space be combined with the memory space of INLAN/DELPHI's industrial history?; Which museographic discourse will best suit, taking into account not only the dichotomy of utility of the space but also of the sources collected?This work seeks to rehabilitate the industrial heritage and enhance the relationship of the former INLAN/DELPHI factory with the city of Ponte de Sor, by interpreting and disseminating its evolution and impact on the region, in addition to the memories of those who lived in this industrial complex.For the implementation of this project, as a museological reality, it is intended to reach a number of former workers who are willing to share their experiences and thus reinforce the role of a future museum that involves its citizens, in order to enrich and diversify data and information about business dynamics and the social and emotional impacts caused in the local community. To this end, it will be necessary to: locate and record written documentation and objects linked to the INLAN/DELPHI of Ponte de Sor and record in sound and film format the oral memories of former workers, proceeding to their analysis and in-depth study.In this way, it is intended to reaffirm the importance of preserving the Industrial Heritage, more specifically the memories of its stakeholders and analyzing them in the light of their time and the impacts felt in a low-population and rural location. Fulfilling a pillar of the functions of museums – Study and Research-, according to the Framework Law for Portuguese Museums - Lei n.º 47/2004, de 19 de Agosto. The analysis of the information collected will allow later to present a museographic suggestion duly adapted to the purpose of the exhibition and the museum space.O Património Industrial, devido a ser um dos últimos tipos de património a ser reconhecido, ainda se debate com conotações negativas que a população em geral ainda associa aos espaços fabris, como: lugares de conflitos sociais e sindicais, agentes poluidores e de degradação urbana, principalmente aquando do seu abandono. Mesmo assim, têm sido diversos os espaços que têm sido alvo de projetos de recuperação e adaptação ao longo dos anos para aí serem desenvolvidos museus industriais ou para novos usos (dependendo da dimensão que têm, condições de conservação e funcionalidade).A intervenção nos espaços industriais - e a sua própria reconversão - dependem da conservação e da história que representam no território em que estão inseridos - ou valor afetivo - que a sua memória tem nas comunidades. Para a valorização do Património Industrial do objecto de estudo deste trabalho e das memórias dos que por nele passaram levantam-se algumas questões: O que se pretende com a valorização, proteção e musealização do antigo espaço Fabril da INLAN/DELPHI?; O investimento e adaptação a novos espaços descaracterizarão o património industrial deixando de fazer sentido a musealização do mesmo?; Como se aliará a nova função do antigo espaço industrial ao espaço de memória da história industrial da INLAN/DELPHI?; Que discurso museográfico melhor se adequará, tendo em conta não só a dicotomia de utilidade do espaço como das fontes recolhidas?.Com este trabalho procura-se, assim, reabilitar o património industrial e valorizar a relação da antiga fábrica INLAN/DELPHI com a cidade de Ponte de Sor, ao interpretar e divulgar a sua evolução e o impacto provocado na região, além das memórias dos que habitaram neste complexo industrial. Para a implementação deste projeto, enquanto realidade museológica, pretende-se chegar a um número de antigos operários que estejam dispostos a partilhar as suas experiências e que assim venham reforçar o papel de um futuro museu que envolva os seus cidadãos, de forma a enriquecer e diversificar os dados e informações sobre a dinâmica empresarial e dos impactos sociais e emocionais provocados na comunidade local. Para tal, será necessário: localizar e registar documentação escrita e objetos ligados à INLAN/DELPHI de Ponte de Sor e registar em formato sonoro e fílmico as memórias orais dos antigos operários, procedendo-se à sua análise e estudo aprofundado.Deste modo, pretende-se reafirmar a importância da preservação do Património Industrial, mais propriamente das memórias dos seus intervenientes e analisá-las à luz do seu tempo e os impactos sentidos numa localidade de baixa densidade populacional e rural. Cumprindo um pilar das funções dos museus – o Estudo e Investigação-, segundo a Lei-quadro dos Museus Portugueses – Lei n.º 47/2004, de 19 de Agosto. A análise da informação recolhida permitirá posteriormente apresentar uma sugestão museográfica devidamente adaptada ao intuito da exposição e do espaço museológico
