Evaluation of Hepatoprotective and Anti-Oxidant Activities in Manjal Noi Kudineer against Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Wistar Rats

There are a number of plants and traditional formulations available to treat liver problems. Recent research shows that plant drugs are relatively non-toxic, safe, and even free of side effects. Around 600 commercial herbal products with hepatoprotective activity are being sold around the world. Around 170 phytoconstituents isolated from 110 plants belonging to 55 families have been reported to possess hepatoprotective activity. Several herbal products are available on the market claiming to support health, relieve symptoms, and cure diseases. However, most of these products lack scientific evidence to support their claims. The present study will evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of MNK against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity, as no pharmacological studies have been done on this polyherbal formulation. MNK aqueous extract was shown to contain Flavonoids, Glycosides, Tannins, Phenols, Steroids, Terpenoids, and Quinones. Many flavonoids have been reported to have antioxidant, coronary heart disease prevention, hepatoprotective, antiinflammatory and anticancer properties. Overall, it appears Manchal Noi kudineer churna has the highest hepatoprotective activity based on the results of the biochemical and histopathological tests. Herbal drug industries are now growing rapidly in the international market. However, despite tremendous advancements, only a few significant and effective hepatoprotective agents exist in modern therapeutics, for instance, silymarin. Researchers worldwide have therefore been looking for herbal agents that are hepatoprotective. This study concluded that the proprietary polyherbal formulation Manchal Noi Kudineer churna may be useful as a hepatoprotective agent. Further in-vivo studies are required to explore the possible mechanisms of action of isolated compounds derived from Manchal Noi Kudineer churna. An investigation into the effects of Manchal Noi Kudineer churna on liver disease patients would strengthen this claim. In conclusion, improvements in serum marker enzyme levels, physical parameters, functional parameters, and histopathological studies support the traditional use of the Manchal Noi Kudineer churna for hepatoprotective activity and thus supports the traditional application of the same under the light of modern science. In conclusion, the present findings demonstrated that MNK at both doses possesses hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity, which is evidenced by lowered serum hepatic marker enzyme activities. Among the two dosages tested, 400 mg/kg/body weight showed more promising hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity, and is comparable to the standard drug Silymarin
