In the decade following the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese war, Russia and Japan struggled for supremacy in Southern Manchuria and Korea. Russia followed up its initial advantage over Japan by seizing the strategic naval base of Port Arthur. The final stage of this contest took the form of a war that erupted in February, 1904. This war assumed major importance not only because it decided the balance of power in Asia for forty years, but also because of the technological and strategical naval advances that came about as a result of this war.
