This thesis includes a compilation of the political, theological and musical influences which were important to the development of the English reformation anthem. The history of the anthem is traced and its relationship to the antiphon and motet is discussed. The stylistic characteristics of Anglican service music are briefly discussed. The six composers discussed were chosen to illustrate the musical features common with English composers from the earliest years of the reformation to the years preceding the English Civil War, during which the anthem was not being composed.Music, Moores School o
